Techniques

Embark on an unforgettable fishing adventure where pristine waters and untouched nature meet, offering the perfect setting to master your skills and explore a variety of fishing techniques.

Spinning

Spinning is the main technique of sport fishing in the Bijagos Archipelago.

Several types of lures are used: surface lures such as poppers or stickbaits, and diving lures such as jerkbaits, spoons, or soft lures. Attacks on surface lures are always very impressive.

The swimming of the lures should be adapted according to the species and the lures: water jets, walking the dog, stop and go, jerky swimming, and more.

We recommend two types of setups: a light or medium-heavy fishing set for bass, allowing you to cast lures from 20 to 60g, and a tropical heavy-duty setup to cast lures from 80 to 150g for facing more powerful opponents. Sensations and excitement multiplied!

JIG

Jig fishing is gaining popularity in Guinea Bissau, and jigging here has its unique characteristics.

The Bijagos Archipelago is located on the continental shelf, which means there are little to no deep pits. The most effective jigging technique is slow jigging, with lures moving close to the bottom in a waddling motion.

The lures commonly used include jig "lame," madaï, and soft lures with leaded heads or Texas rigs. The weight of the lures ranges from 40 to 120g, depending on the depth (up to 40m) and the current, which can be very strong.

For jigging, we recommend a medium reel and rod setup. Some fishermen prefer a casting setup, which allows for more precise lure control. Be prepared for aggressive strikes and powerful first runs—hold tight to your rods!

Trolling

Trolling is a highly effective and relaxing technique, perfect after an intense day of casting. It’s also an excellent choice for beginners, offering the chance to catch impressive barracudas that can exceed 30 kg.

In the Bijagos, trolling is a coastal technique. While you won’t find marlin or sailfish, barracudas are abundant, along with trevallies, and occasionally cobia or tarpon.

Our experienced sailors are experts in this fishing method and know the channels where barracudas gather based on the tides. The lures used are 15 to 20 cm diving baits with large flaps. The rods must be sturdy: stand-up rods (which we provide) or, even better, rods for heavy casting.

Be prepared—the strike is brutal, and the initial rush is intense!

Fly Fishing

Fly fishing is perhaps one of the most technical fishing techniques, but the thrill of enticing a fish just a few meters away is unmatched. There's nothing quite like the sensation of watching the backing line fly!

One of the best spots is the beach of Kere, home to species such as elops, trevallies, bonito mackerel, red carp, and barracudas—all within close range of the fly. The largest jacks caught here weighed an impressive 14 kg!

We also offer other incredible fly fishing spots, accessible by boat or on foot. Highlights include a 1 km stretch through a bed of stunning rocks and the entrance to a “magic” bolong.

We recommend two setups: one with an 8-weight line, the most versatile choice, and another with a 10/11-weight line for those ready to tackle larger fish. Free fly fishing introductions are available for anyone eager to try this exciting technique!

Stalled Fishing

Basic technique: a lead and a hook with a bait are enough.

The stalled fishing is a bit neglected by our fishermen but it is however so fun and terribly effective.

It is a provider of beautiful surprises: sharks, cobias, big otholiths, merous, rays, red carp, trevallies, porpoises, sinpot, catfish. The list is still long.

Our sailors know all the spots close to Kere. The GPS and the sounder can help position the boat. The material is a rugged rod and stiff enough to support a lead of 100-120g depending on the current and depth.
