Techniques

Embark on an unforgettable fishing adventure where pristine waters and untouched nature meet, offering the perfect setting to master your skills and explore a variety of fishing techniques.

Spinning

Spinning is the main sport fishing technique used in the Bijagos Archipelago.
Various types of lures are used: surface lures like poppers or stickbaits, and diving lures such as jerkbaits, spoons, or soft plastics. Surface lure strikes are always spectacular.
The action of the lure must be adapted to the target species and the type of lure: splashing (with poppers), walking the dog (with stickbaits), stop-and-go, jerky retrieves, etc.
We recommend using two types of setups: a light or medium one, similar to sea bass fishing in France, capable of casting lures from 20 to 60g; and a heavy tropical setup, for casting lures from 80 to 150g to handle more powerful opponents. Pure excitement and adrenaline guaranteed!

JIG

Jigging is gaining popularity in Guinea-Bissau, and it has its own unique characteristics.
The Bijagos Archipelago lies on the continental shelf, meaning there are few or no deep trenches. The most effective jigging technique here is slow jigging, using lures that flutter and move close to the bottom.
Commonly used lures include slow jigs, madais, and soft plastics rigged on jig heads or Texas hooks. Lure weights range from 40 to 120g, depending on depth (up to 40 meters) and current, which can be very strong.
For jigging, we recommend using a medium-sized rod and reel. Some anglers prefer baitcasting setups for more precise control of the lure. Be ready for aggressive strikes and powerful initial runs – hold on to your rods!

Trolling

Fly Fishing

Fly fishing may be one of the most challenging techniques, but the thrill of enticing a fish just meters away is truly unmatched.
One of the best spots is Kere Beach, where species like tarpon, jacks, bonito mackerel, red snappers, and barracudas are all within fly-casting range. The largest jack caught here weighed an impressive 14 kg!
We also offer access to other incredible fly fishing locations, reachable by boat or on foot. Highlights include a one-kilometer stretch across a stunning rock bed and the entrance to a “magical” bolong.
We recommend two setups: one with a 6 to 8 weight line for versatility, and another with a 10/11 weight line for those looking to take on larger fish. Free fly fishing introductions are available for anyone curious to try this exciting and elegant technique!

Stalled Fishing

Basic technique: a sinker and a hook with bait are all you need.
Bottom fishing, or palangrotte, is somewhat overlooked by many anglers, but it's incredibly fun and highly effective.
It often delivers great surprises: sharks, cobias, croakers, groupers, rays, red snappers, jacks, pink sea bream, sinpot, catfish… and the list goes on.
Our skippers know all the best spots near Kere. A GPS and fishfinder can help position the boat accurately.
The recommended gear is a strong, fairly stiff rod capable of handling a 100–120g sinker, depending on current and depth.
