Located in south of Bijagos archipelago, the Orango Natural Park is a nature reserve where fauna is diversified thanks to her mangrove swamp and lagoons, savannah and palm grove. There, you can find the very rare hippopotamus amphibius, but also 5 species of turtles, 2 species of crocodiles and colonies of migrator and african-tropical birds. Don’t forget the possibilitie to meet a lots of dolphins !

Villages

Preserved from external influences, Bijagos islands are gifted by nature. Then, Bijagos population survives thanks to agricultural and halieutics ressources (seafood, fishes...). They cultivate a lot cashews to sell cashew nuts, raise some pigs, cows and hens, harvest palm to extract oil to their own consumption. They harvest rice during the rainy season. Based on a matrilineal family, the woman is at the heart of this traditional animist society.

Turtles

The João Vieira Poilão marine national park is the most important nesting site of the western facade of the Atlantic for the green turtle «Chelonia mydas». The park is formed by 4 islands (even the sacred islands of Poïlao) and 3 small islands. This is a major site for the breeding of the 3 sea turtles species («Chelonia mydas», «Eretmochelys imbricata», «Lepidochelys olivacea»). The park also brings a lots of piscivorous birds species who come to breeding too. At last, it shelters 2 dolphins species (humpback dolphin, Sousateuzsii and great dolphin, Tursiops truncatus), and varieted fishes (trevallies, snappers, sharks).

Apes

Created in 2008, the Cantanhez natural park is formed by 104.767 ha in south-west of the Guinea-Bissau. It shelters one of the last subhumid forest massif of the west Africa. You can meet apes whose the most representative is the chimpanzee, also but more rarely magistrate colobus, elephant, leopard, buffalo, and a lots of birds species. You can also meet dolphins and manatees because of his large coastal area, covered by mangrove swamp and watered by 2 big rivers.

Nature reserve of the biosphere since 1996, the Bijagos archipelago gives a wild, lush and varied vegetation, different from an island to another and suitable for the autarkic life of local populations. Kere kept the authenticity of an african islan, with significant vegetation and perfectly suitable homes. The bungalows are formed by one or two bedrooms and are located in front of the sea or in the shade of big trees. The landscape is preserved, the white sand lays near by black rocks. This is a magical place where the frugivorous bats come with the night. Hard not to fall in love with this island !

Ornithology

Breeding significant site of the migrator birds in Africa, real study pond for the ornithologist, the Bijagos archipelago shelters more than a million of waterfowls. There are more than 130 migrator birds species who come to breed each year from North Europe or Siberia. Then, you can watch pelicans, spoonbills, ibis, eagle-fishermen, caspian terns, reef egrets, shorebirds, pink flamingos, Senegal jabirus, Goliath herons...
